Air Ducts that Shine

Air Ducts that Shine after Kleen Rite’s Friendly service.

When cleaning your home, it’s important to not forget about the necessary duct work. Just because you don’t see what’s inside the ducts, doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t breathe what comes out of them.

Duct cleaning is an important part of home maintenance because it gives you better air quality inside your home, lessens the presence of molds and allergens, and prevents non-allergy sufferers from developing allergic reactions. People with asthma are particularly susceptible to dust as well as allergens and suffer greatly when there is too much of these items in the air.

A common question we get asked: when is the right time to have your ducts cleaned? One of the common signs is when you see that the dust and dirt is coming out from air conditioning vents. Another sign is when the flow of air isn’t as good as it was in the past. Put your hand to the front of the vent when the HVAC system is turned on to assess the situation. In the event that there is too much dust and dirt coming out from the vents and the air isn’t as strong as it used to be, it may be time to have the ducts cleaned.

The best way to know when is the right time for duct cleaning is if you start sneezing for no apparent reason or if you become increasingly stuffed up in the home. The situation should be assessed every year, and when in doubt, always check with a specialist like Kleen Rite.

Best Time to Clean Ducts

The most appropriate time of the year to clean ducts is now – in the fall. If you live in Ontario, you’ll soon be turning on the furnace, so you want to get that air cleaned before it begins to circulate. Although some of our customers start to see an increase in sensitivity in late summer and choose to have it done then. Particularly, it is important to have your ducts cleaned if you just bought a newly-built home. The construction of the home involves a lot of dust and debris and often they are not cleaned before the keys are turned over to the new residents.

How often should it be done? Duct cleaning is recommended every three years, depending on your living conditions. You should consider doing it son when:

• You have completed home renovations;
• You have family members with asthma and allergies;
• You have installed a new furnace or air conditioning system;
• You have pets and young children living in your home.

If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact our duct cleaning specialists in the Golden Horseshoe area, serving areas from Toronto to Niagara to Kitchener/Waterloo, including Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, and Brampton. Kleen Rite provides you with a free and no obligation quote over the phone. Wee also own state-of-the-art technology that fits right into your ducts and shows you what you’re up against.

Important Lesson of the Day:

Approximately 30% of your energy you use for heating and cooling is wasted. Dust, debris, and other contaminants force the system to work harder and shorten the life of your system. When the HVAC system is cleaned, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the desired temperatures. As a result, you save energy, meaning you save money.

4 Tips for Furniture Cleaning

Furniture Cleaning Comments Off on 4 Tips for Furniture Cleaning

kid in superhero costume on couch

Microfiber and leather couches are becoming  popular commodities in the home.  Although they are stain resistant, they are prone to getting dirty over time.  Quite often we forget to clean our furniture, even though it absorbs all the dead skin cells, dust and allergens floating around the home.  It is therefore important to create a regular furniture cleaning schedule.

In this blog post, our professional-trained cleaning specialists aim to debunk the common myths about furniture cleaning by offering 4 useful tips for you to follow.

1. Test the cleaning solution out:

Before applying the selected cleaning solution to your furniture, it’s recommended that you test the colourfastness of the fabric on an unnoticeable area of the furnishing.  Apply the solution to a clean white cloth, and press against the test area for no more than 30 seconds.  Examine the cloth for colour transfer.

2. Avoid over wetting the fabric:

Avoid over wetting the fabric.  If you apply too much water or cleaning solution, it could spread the stain and soak the padding underneath it.  When that happens, you are inviting mould, mildew and bacteria, which are far worse than any furniture stain.  Speeding up the drying time with a hot-air dryer will not help – heat will only set the stain.  Should you find yourself in such a situation, merely blot the area dry.

3. Many cleaners are too harsh for leather furniture:

Even soap that is appropriate for hard leather may be too much for the softer material commonly used on sofas, love seats and other leather furniture.  As a general rule of thumb, anything with ammonia or alkaline can harm the furniture beyond repair, so avoid them entirely.

4. Protect against oil residue:

Even with protection against water-based stains, there are some things that will stain.  Be sure to consider oil-based substances and grimy dirt that may come into contact with your furniture.  As well, read the labels of your furniture protection sprays carefully to find out exactly what they will safeguard against.

These are just some of the many furniture cleaning tips that will help a homeowner maintain the look and feel of the furniture. However, when these aren’t enough, it’s best to hire a professional to thoroughly treat the material.

Importance of Steam Cleaning:

Many homeowners do not realize that steam cleaning furniture is possible.  Actually, this process sometimes prolongs the life of many items in the house. While there are some store-bought items that a consumer can use to perform basic procedures on fabrics, these are not as good in the long term as the services of a professional. An expert who is trained to treat household fixtures will be able to remove more dirt, debris, odours, and stains with ease. They will also be better equipped and trained to monitor water usage meaning your hard earned furniture won’t get damaged.

Is Fall Duct Cleaning Necessary?

Duct Cleaning Comments Off on Is Fall Duct Cleaning Necessary?

In this article, our Burlington carpet and duct cleaning experts attempt to answer three very important questions: 1) How often do you need to clean your ducts?  2) Does your newly-built home require duct cleaning? 3) How urgently do you need the ducts cleaned?  The focus of this article is on the current season – Fall.

ragweed and blue skies

Before we delve in the topic of fall duct cleaning, it’s important to be aware of duct cleaning scams that are going around lately. We’ve had several calls from clients asking us questions about whether they need their ducts cleaned or not.  The source of most concerns is the telemarketers who call them repeatedly and mask their numbers in order to avoid penalties imposed by the CRTC.

We caution you when hiring unknown home repair or duct cleaning services. It’s important to review the credentials and qualifications of the company and its employees/contractors and read the fine print of any contract you sign. Very often the price only includes some ducts for cleaning, when it should include all. As well, be wary of the upsell, and seek a second opinion before agreeing to the services. Seeking a second opinion often costs very little and can offer you more insight into the problem, if it exists.

To ensure you are getting your money’s worth, we recommend you hire a local professional company like Kleen Rite who has decades of experience and the technology to show you the before and after results.

How often should you have your ducts cleaned?

We recommend that you have your ducts cleaned every 3 years in order to optimize your home’s air quality.

Do newly-built homes require duct cleaning?

We recommend that you get your ducts cleaned if you have a newly-built home. The building process usually creates a large amount of dust and debris, which is often not removed by the building crew when they turn over the keys to you.

How urgent is duct cleaning?

Fall is the worst time for allergy sufferers. Ragweed is the biggest trigger in autumn. The yellow-coloured weed starts releasing pollen in August. This can last until September and sometimes even October. Mold is another trigger. Mold spores love wet spots outside of your home. Damp leaves that fall in September and October are the ideal breading grounds for mold. And last but not least are dust mites. They often get stirred into the air the first time you turn on the heat in the fall.

While duct cleaning is not urgent, it can really push people around. Some of the symptoms you may experience include runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes and nose, and even dark circles under your eyes. You may not control the allergies you experience outdoors, but you don’t have to suffer the same fate indoors. Indoor allergies can always be reduced by regularly cleaning your ducts and improving air circulation.

How to keep mud out of your house

Carpet Cleaning Comments Off on How to keep mud out of your house

If you have kids, dogs, or both, cleaning up around the house can become a more challenging task when your little ones or your furry friends track mud into the house. Not only can dried mud be difficult and time-consuming to clean, but it can also be loaded with pesticides and other pollutants. Mud also carries a threat to the surface and finish of your flooring. With all that in mind, rather than working hard to clean up mud after it’s entered your home, the best cleaning strategy is to keep mud from entering the house in the first place.

Finding the perfect doormat

Most people don’t put too much thought into their doormat, but a really good one can make a difference in keeping mud out of the house (and yes, there are really good doormats out there). The mat should be long enough so that you can walk across it with both feet before entering the house, and wide enough as the door. You can vacuum or shake the mats when they get too dirty.

muddy feet

Keep dirty shoes at the door

After a day spent in the great outdoors, kids (and adults) can end up with muddy footwear. Having the right doormat to wipe your feet will help keep mud and dirt outside. Just inside your front door, make it easy for guests and family members to remove their shoes. Keep a shoe rack or tray near the door, and possibly a few slippers as well so everyone can easily transition from outdoor to indoor footwear. It’s also a good idea to have a small bench or seat near the door so that anyone who needs to sit while putting on or taking off his or her shoes will have a spot.

Dealing with dirty paws

Dogs don’t wear removable shoes, unless forced into them by their owners. That being the case, dog paws can get muddy after they roam around parks and lawns, and they’ll need wiping before they can enter the house. The best defence for muddy paws is to place a mat outside every door of your home, and an easy-to-wash rug inside each entrance. Use the outdoor mat to get the bulk of the dirt off your pet’s paws, and the rug as a backup to get what may have been missed outside.

It’s also a good idea to keep a container of towels near the door so you can give your dog a wipe down when they come inside. You might consider keeping a bucket of water near the door as well, so you can dip your dog’s paws before drying them off with a towel. There are also several pre-moistened pet wipes on the market, and they can come in handy when you need to quickly give your dog’s paws a cleaning after a messy walk.

It may be difficult at first to get your dog to sit still while you give their paws a cleaning, but if you get into a cleaning routine with your dog every time you return home, he or she will get used to the process. If you need to sweeten the deal, keep a few dog treats ready near the door so you can reward your dog for cooperating with the wipe-down.

How to clean a carpet after a flood

Carpet Cleaning Comments Off on How to clean a carpet after a flood

Flooding is one of the biggest challenges a homeowner can face, particularly because cleaning up after a flood needs quick decision-making, and quick action – two things that are easier said than done, especially when dealing with the stress of a flood. But if you do act quickly, you can salvage a good portion of your belongings, including your carpet.

Was it just rain?

It’s important to know just what was in the water that entered your home. If rainwater flooded the house, it’s possible to save your carpet, and other items as well. Carpets exposed to rainwater alone should be cleaned within 24 hours of being saturated. However, if sewage or rainwater partially contaminated with sewage has entered your home and soaked your carpet, you’ll need to either discard your carpet or have it cleaned and dried by a professional carpet cleaning service.

Water from the sea, a river, or a lake that comes into contact with the ground before it reaches your home is also considered unsanitary and can cause serious health problems. Like in the instance of sewage, it’s best to call a professional carpet cleaner or discard the carpeting altogether.

fans large and small

Get the air flowing

Once you’re sure it’s safe to head into the areas of your house that have been flooded, open all the windows in the room with the carpet. Not only will some fresh air help alleviate the odour, but it will also help dry out the carpet. Next, set up fans near the windows – preferably on the window box itself, if possible – and crank the fans to their highest setting. If there are ceiling fans in the carpeted room, turn those up as well.

To help prevent the growth of mould, and further the drying process, bring a dehumidifier into the room, which will take more moisture out of the air.

Move things out

Remove any items from the carpeted room so that they can be safeguarded, and so that they won’t get in the way of your drying and cleaning efforts.

Get to the padding

If your carpet was installed with tack strips, it may be possible to remove the carpet, have it cleaned, and then reinstalled. You’re better off replacing carpet padding, because any attempts to clean the padding will likely be futile.

Wet-dry vacuums and carpet shampooers

Thoroughly go over your carpet with a wet-dry vacuum. Keep running the vacuum and emptying it as necessary, until it no longer sucks up water. You may need to go over the carpet many times to get out all the water, but it’s best to do a thorough job; even a bit of leftover moisture can lead to mould growth down the road.

After you’ve worked the wet-dry vac, you’ll need to use a carpet shampooer to really clean out the dirt and odour.

Dry and sprinkle baking soda

Once the carpet has dried from the shampoo treatment, use an ordinary vacuum to go over the area. If you’re left with a lingering, musty smell, sprinkle some baking soda across the carpet and work it in with a broom or sponge mop. Let the baking soda sit in the carpet overnight, and then vacuum it up. Vacuum the carpet twice, going back and forth in a different direction on the second run.

One last note, since most new carpets are made of nylon, they should not be treated with bleach.

You found WHAT? Odd items discovered by air duct cleaners

Duct Cleaning Comments Off on You found WHAT? Odd items discovered by air duct cleaners

stack of vhs tapes

You come across some, well, let’s just say interesting things in the duct cleaning business. While most air duct cleaning jobs reveal years of dirt and dust, some workers have stumbled upon some much stranger items. From the disgusting to the dangerous, you’d be surprised just what can get caught in a home’s air duct system. Here’s a sampling of some of the strangest finds documented.

Earlier this year, a duct cleaning company in Florida published a list of the oddities workers have pulled from dirty air ducts around the state. One experienced technician noted that he’s found a few controlled substances, from crystal meth to crack pipes to marijuana.

In addition to drugs, some duct cleaners have come across firearms stashed in ductwork. A duct cleaner from Atlanta found a .44-caliber pistol in one of his client’s ducts. Apparently, air ducts make good hiding places when you want to keep some of your possessions out of sight of the authorities, or out of reach of children. Of course, it’s only a good hiding place until you need someone to help clean the air in your home.

The remnants of past meals

Duct cleaners often find food-related debris in ductwork, which can sometimes be the result of thoughtless construction workers who toss their garbage into the vents while a house is being built. That debris has included coffee cups, food wrappers, chicken bones, half-eaten burgers, and even empty beer bottles.

That’s right, we’re talking bodily waste here, and not just from the bodies of animals. While it’s not too surprising for a duct cleaner to see droppings left behind by mice or perhaps even raccoons, would you ever think to find human feces in air ducts? Some cleaners have had the misfortune of finding dried human waste in air ducts, and the culprit again may be the construction workers who built the house, and who didn’t have the time or the will power to hold it in until they could get to the port-o-potty.

Dead critters

Occasionally, a family pet goes missing, and the owners eventually come to terms with the fact that it found its way out of the house. But did it really ever leave the house? Not in the case of one duct cleaner who found a dead iguana that belonged to the homeowners. At least they could give their pet a proper burial.

Other duct cleaners have cleared dead spiders, rats, mice, and even a small fox from the ductwork of their clients. Sometimes duct cleaners have to double as animal control workers.

VHS tapes?

One of the strangest hauls from an air duct is a collection of videocassettes, discovered by a duct cleaning company in Scarborough. The company was called to examine a family room vent that didn’t seem to be letting in any air. After breaking a hole in the drywall ceiling and cutting a hole in the duct, the crew pulled out a remarkable 45 VHS tapes and 19 books. It turned out the family’s four-year-old son had made a habit of dropping the items down the vent. Maybe he really wanted his parents to invest in a DVD player.

Clean dusty air ducts to improve the quality of indoor air

Duct Cleaning Comments Off on Clean dusty air ducts to improve the quality of indoor air

Dirty Vent

The quality of air in Burlington is deteriorating rapidly thanks to the increase in factories in the area and number of cars and trucks on our highways.

Air pollution is a major cause of concern.  It affects the quality of air.  Polluted air can cause a host of ailments such as sinus problems, allergies and breathing difficulties.  One way of improving the quality of indoor air is to get your air ducts cleaned by a professional.

Dirty Air Ducts and health risks associated with them

Air ducts are found in places like homes, offices, schools, hotels, retail establishments and apartments.  Dirty air ducts are the number one cause of indoor air pollution.  Allergens, fungi, bacteria, dust, mold and other microorganisms can accumulate inside the air ducts.  Whenever you run a heating or a cooling unit, pollutants can get pulled in.  These contaminants will eventually get blown into your rooms.  When you and your family inhale this contaminated air, you are putting yourself at the risk of developing health problems like asthma, lung disease, bronchitis, headaches, nasal congestion, dry eyes, tiredness, nausea and insomnia.  Biological pollutants like bacteria and fungi also cause illnesses.

Benefits of duct cleaning

By cleaning air ducts, you can greatly improve the quality of the air inside your house.  Air duct cleaning will improve air circulation and remove contaminants.  It will also improve the efficiency of your cooling and heating systems.

Duct cleaning is all about cleaning and disinfecting the various components of your cooling and heating systems.  If the ducts are not cleaned periodically, the components can get contaminated with microorganisms and dirt.  Moisture trapped inside the ducts acts as a good breeding ground for fungi and bacteria.  When you inhale air contaminated with bacteria and fungi you will develop respiratory illnesses.  Mice running thorough the ducts, may leave their droppings.  This too can result in air contamination.

Duct Cleaning professionals have years of experience in cleaning and disinfecting ducts.  They also have the right tools.  Professionals can clean residential, commercial or industrial ducts.  The result will be a healthier and cleaner home and office because dust will no longer be blowing into the rooms.  This will seriously reduce the chance of indoor allergic reaction.  In addition, when you remove the dust found in the air ducts, you are also removing dust mites that feed on this debris.

Even if your home is newly constructed, you will still need to get your air ducts cleaned.  During construction, materials like wood, dust, plaster, drywall particles, insulation and insects can accumulate in air ducts.  If you remove these contaminants, you will have fresh air in your home.  Also new homes are more air tight because they are designed to be energy efficient.  If dust gets trapped in the air ducts of an energy efficient home, it will have a serious effect on the health of its occupants.

If your air ducts are left unclean for years, they will become a major source of air pollution. By getting your air ducts cleaned once or twice a year, you can improve the health of your family, employees and clients.

Pet hair and pet stain removal

Carpet Cleaning Comments Off on Pet hair and pet stain removal

English Bulldog Puppy Sitting on A Carpet

Your pets are wonderful, cuddly creatures that offer affection and companionship. But they shed. And sometimes they make a mess on your floor (or worse, your carpet). Being a pet owner means having to clean up after your animal friends, and it can be a difficult, time-consuming task. Here are some ways you can make the clean-up process easier, so you can spend more time having fun with your pet.

Manage pet hair

One of the best ways to combat animal hair is to contain it. Place an old towel or sheet on the area where your pet likes to rest. Every now and then, take the covering outside, give it a good shake, and toss it in the washing machine. Don’t overlook pet grooming either, it’s an effective way to cut down on the amount of hair you’ll find around your home.

Vacuums for the carpet

There’s no big secret on how to remove animal hair from carpets – you’ll need to vacuum. Don’t wait until there’s a layer of dog or cat hair on top of your carpet; if you vacuum multiple times a week, you won’t run the risk of your vacuum clogging or losing suction. If your vacuum comes with attachments, make use of them on carpeted staircases, drapes, and other upholstered areas.

The power of static electricity

For wood and other hard flooring, an electrostatic mop will do a better job than a vacuum, which will just end up blowing the hair around. Similarly, a rubber broom makes use of an electrostatic charge to trap fur and dirt. Conventional broom bristles will just push the fur from one spot to another.

You can also put dryer sheets to use outside the laundry room. Rub dryer sheets on furniture and drapery to pick up animal hair. Once more, it’s the electrostatic force that traps the hair for an easy clean up.

Cleaning pet hair from clothing

Unless you have an all-leather wardrobe, you’re going to end up with animal hair on your clothes from time to time. Lint rollers usually do the trick, but you can also try using masking tape. Place pieces of masking tape over the areas of your clothes where pet hair is clinging, and then pull off the strips with a quick motion. Of course, don’t try the masking tape trick on delicate clothing.

Cleaning up pet stains

If your pet has an accident on a carpeted floor, you’ll need to spring into action right away. If left alone, pet urine can permanently alter the dye in your carpet. Here are two cleaning concoctions you can utilize.

The first is a simple formula of vinegar and baking soda. Soak the stain with vinegar and then add a small amount of baking soda on top. You might actually be able to see the yellow stain being sucked into the mound of baking soda. Cover the affected area with a bowl and let it dry naturally for a day or two. Sweep up the baking soda and vacuum the area thoroughly.

The second solution combines ¼ teaspoon of clear dishwashing liquid with one cup of lukewarm water. Apply the solution to the stained area then blot with a clean, dry towel. If the stain persists, wet the area using a towel dampened with lukewarm water. Dampen another towel with the solution and blot the area again. Keep alternating between the damp towel and the soapy towel until the stain is gone.

Carpet Trends

The words “carpet” and “trends” don’t usually find themselves beside each other. That’s because carpet is seen as something as an afterthought when it comes to interior design. Furniture, paint, lighting, and even accessories are often the areas that receive the lion’s share of the attention from interior designers and homeowners. But there’s no reason why carpet can’t stand out, and perhaps even be the standout item in a room. You just have to go beyond beige.

Blasts of colour

Coloured carpets give any room a distinctive style, and more homeowners are starting to utilize their carpeting to set the tone for, and be the focal point in, rooms around the house.

When deciding on the colour of your carpeting, think about the area that it will service. For high-traffic areas like stairs and hallways, consider a durable carpet in a darker shade that will minimize dirt and vacuum marks. Chocolate brown and even charcoal are good colour options in areas that will see plenty of footwork. If there are small areas of your home that need carpeting, they’re good candidates for places to play with colour; you can bring out a bit of fun without overwhelming your living space.

For bold styling, carpets in shades of red, blue, and purple create striking bases from which you can build the rest of your interior design. But if you’re not quite ready to take the plunge into a daring colour palette, you can opt for neutrals with a little bit more to them, like creams and both warm and cool tones of grey.

Another, sometimes overlooked way that carpets add to the style of a room is how they feel. Carpeting is meant to be comfortable underfoot, and with so many manufacturing options now available, you can really crank up the coziness.

Bedrooms are the best rooms for plush carpeting with deep textures, or carpeting created with tighter twists that can make you feel even more nestled in. Some other luxurious styles include high, dense twists, chunky felts, and oversized loop piles. You can even find carpets made of unique blends that pair wool with silk, linen, cotton, and even paper.

Lastly, texture can be made visible with patterns woven directly into the carpet. Designs in flowers, lattices, and leaves offer unique shapes that can be coordinated with patterns on other furnishings.

 Earth tones

You can go green with your carpet quite literally by selecting a shade of green, but you can also opt for environmentally friendly carpeting that uses natural materials. Raffia, sisal, and sea grass are all organic substances that can be used in the creation of carpets and rugs. Their typically earthy tones work well in urban settings where a touch of nature is welcome.

If you want a natural look indoors, you don’t necessarily need organic materials. As noted above, textured carpets that incorporate floral and other nature-centric patterns can bring a bit of the great outdoors indoors.

The range of new carpeting products available gives you a great amount of creative flexibility.  It also shifts the design focus from the furnishings on top of a carpet to the carpet itself.

Where and Where Not to Place Carpets

Carpet and Couch

Carpeting in your home has its pros and cons. On the plus side, carpets provide warmth, cushioning as you walk around the house, a comfortable place for kids to play, and a degree of sound absorption. On the other hand, carpets require more maintenance than other forms of flooring, and there’s always the worry that one errant glass of wine will make a big splash and permanently mark the fibres on your floor. Because of the two sides to carpeting, it’s important to place it in the right areas of your home so that you can enjoy its benefits without worrying about its drawbacks.

Have you ever arose on a winter morning, tossed your warm comforter aside, then felt a cold shock when you stepped foot on bare flooring? Unless you can seamlessly slide your feet from your bed to your slippers each and every morning, a carpeted bedroom floor may be worth considering. Carpeting in the bedroom gives the room a softer feel, both literally and figuratively, and that’s important for the place where you rest and recharge. Additionally, the sound absorbing ability of carpet can help keep the activities of the bedroom’s occupants private – teenagers can listen to their music, and adults can do whatever it is adults do in their bedrooms.

The living room

Carpet in the living room means your couch won’t be the only soft seat in the area. A carpeted floor creates space for people to stretch out comfortably and watch TV, play a game, or just converse with others. In the colder months, carpeting can help keep the family room warm, reducing the need to crank up the furnace.

When you consider carpeting for your home, look beyond the rooms themselves. Staircases are good candidates for carpeting, because they provide more traction than hard, flat surfaces, making climbing or descending stairs a little safer. If you have kids who like to run around the house, you don’t want to risk them slipping on a step and hurting themselves.

The kitchen

When’s the last time you saw someone with a carpeted kitchen? Well there’s a reason for that. Cooking and serving food can be messy processes, and there’s always the risk of food and drink spilling on the floor. Crumbs alone would be a pain to constantly vacuum up, but imagine spilling tomato sauce or chocolate pudding. Using the kitchen sink can also pose a problem, as splashed water will soak into carpet.

The bathroom

Like the kitchen, the bathroom is rarely, if ever, a room that sees carpeting. Bathroom rugs that can be easily removed and cleaned are okay, but wall-to-tub carpeting is a no-no. Because bathrooms are often warm, damp, and humid places, they can be a breeding ground for mold. A carpeted floor only adds to that possibility by trapping heat and soaking up water.

Basements and attics

Mold can be a problem in both basements and attics because, like bathrooms, they are often damp and humid places. Carpet in these areas can turn into a home for mold, which may lead to costly and time-consuming cleaning. In the case of basements, carpet can be problematic in the event of a flood. Rather than risk having to tear out carpet after a basement flood, you might be wise to leave it out of the basement to begin with.
