In the course of our usual furniture cleaning services, we sometimes come across a unique seating piece. We’ve cleaned a variety of homes, and we do notice the individual style that families bring to their living quarters. With that in mind, we thought we would do a little research into some famous chair designers, and see who may have influenced those interesting pieces.
Frank Lloyd Wright
One of the world’s most recognized and celebrated architects was also an interior designer. Frank Lloyd Wright’s style is epitomized by the design philosophy he called organic architecture. Organic architecture encourages structures to be designed in harmony with their environments, and with humanity itself.
You can see his style in a desk and chair set he designed in 1904 for the Larkin Company office in Buffalo, New York. The chair attached to the desk creates the sort of harmony Wright strived for, and its straight lines are reminiscent of some of Wright’s other home designs.
Walter Gropius
Walter Gropius is perhaps best known as the founder of the Bauhaus School, a German design school that combined crafts and the fine arts. The Bauhaus style would later become influential in modernist architecture, art, and design.
Clean, rectilinear lines, were the hallmark of Bauhaus style, and you can see that in Armchair No. F 51, designed by Gropius in 1920. Bauhaus buildings are recognizable by their clean lines and flat surfaces, and those same design sensibilities were carried over to Gropius’ furniture creations.
Arne Jacobsen
Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen is known for his simple yet eye-catching chair designs. He created the egg chair in 1956 for the Scandinavian Airlines System Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. In fact, Jacobsen designed the entire hotel – from the façade to the cutlery. The curvature of the chair makes it look comfortable and inviting.
Le Corbusier
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, was a pioneer of modern architecture and urban planning. But he also left his mark on furniture with a couple of iconic chair designs.
His signature chair has a modern and masculine design, and its exterior metal frame is a detail regularly utilized by today’s furniture designers. His chaise takes on a more relaxed style with its flowing curves, but maintains an industrial aesthetic by again exposing a metal frame.
Eero Saarinen
A Finnish-American architect and industrial designer, Eero Saarinen had a recognizable neofuturistic style to both his buildings and furniture pieces. His tulip chairs exhibit that futuristic style, and are colourful additions to just about any room.
In addition to winning several design awards, the tulip chair gained recognition in pop culture when they were used on the set of Star Trek. The chairs were used on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, and throughout the rest of the ship.
