In spite of your best efforts to keep your carpets clean, they will eventually accumulate dirt.  If you have kids and pets in your home, drops and spills are unavoidable.  Through every day life, they stain the carpet and make it look unattractive.  Spills may also cause bad odor.

Most carpets are stain-resistant. However, none of them are stain-proof. That means although they are good at resisting stains, they can still get stained.

Over time, your carpet’s fibers will trap oils, bacteria and dirt. Besides discoloring the material, they cause stains and unpleasant odors.

Vintage VacuumHow do professionals clean your carpets and make them look as good as new?

Steam cleaning is one of the most effective ways to clean your carpets. This job requires expert skills, so you must not attempt this if you don’t know what you are doing.   Steam cleaning is a physically demanding chore. It involves a lot of bending and back and forth movements.  We’ve written about the dangers of DIY carpet cleaning in the past, but if you are confident that you will be able to steam clean on your own, here are some tips.

Test the cleaning solution

Before using a steam cleaning product, you have to test a hidden area of the carpet to make certain that the product does not discolor or burn the carpet.

Use recommended cleaning solutions

Don’t use non-recommended or home-made cleaning solutions to clean the carpet.  If you are renting a steam cleaner, it will come with a solution or soap.

Vacuum the floors

This secret is a little common sense, but before working with the steam cleaner, you have to vacuum the floors. Make sure you get under the couch, behind the tv set, and into the corners.

Blot stains out of Carpet

Stains should be blotted as soon as they happen. If you wait too long, the stain can easily take hold of the carpet.

Clean your carpets on a dry day

Don’t try to steam clean your carpets on a cold winter day or a humid day. Attempt this job on a dry day.  Kleen Rite, on the other hand, has the know how and tools to clean your carpet on almost any given day.

If you manage to keep your carpets clean for a long time, you will not have to steam clean them very often. Place doormats at every entryway and encourage both friends and family to wipe their feet. Even if they forget to wipe, the mats will definitely catch some of the dirt when they walk over them. Ask all family members to remove their shoes before entering the home.

Choose a steam cleaner that does not damage or change the appearance of the carpet.  Make sure that the steam cleaner can remove both soil and water.  Avoid over wetting as this can lead to the growth of mildew. Your carpet must not remain wet for more than 24 hours.

Make sure that the steam cleaner is powerful enough to extract the solution used to clean the carpets. If the cleaning agent remains on the carpet, it will lead to re-soiling.
